How does Release work?

Before a child can be seen for speech and language therapy, they need to have an updated speech and language evaluation. Release accepts outside reports, upon reading and approval of the report with recommendations. Sometimes, Release will need further information than the report gives, and will need to do more assessment on a child prior to therapy. The cost of a Release evaluation is €350, which includes a detailed report. Having a report does not guarantee each child a place in the programme, though, as the Release Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) will need to determine which groups suit which children best. Release SLTs place children in groups according to the following factors:

  1. Communication Needs
  2. Age
  3. Disability, if any

The cost of therapy is €75 per hour, and each class will run for one hour per week, for a set number of weeks. Each session of classes is determined as much as possible by the national school's calendar. So, one session might last for 8 classes, while the next session may last for 11. Therefore, a 10 week session would cost €750. We encourage parents to do fundraising for Release to benefit their child and are happy to supply some information on popular fundraising tips for those interested.

What is Release?

Release is an internationally award winning not for profit speech and language therapy social enterprise with a focus on empowering parents to best work with their child. Release provides a group therapy model, backed by ASHA accepted evidence based research, which helps to improve speech and language skills, social skills and decrease parent stress levels. Release builds a non-judgemental culture in the sessions where parents discuss and share their own experiences to help the needs of their children in a safe, friendly environment.

Evidence Based Research

Through the generosity of the Iris O'Brien Foundation and another anonymous donator in 2008, Release began quantitative research with The George Washington University. The research included 69 children aged birth - 5 years, with a communication disability such as Down syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorder and cerebral palsy.

The research was submitted to the American Speech Language and Hearing Association's Call for Papers for the 2009 Convention and to Release's acclaim the research was accepted www.asha.org. This is the largest and most prestigious of all conventions in the field of speech and language therapy, attended by over 12,000 speech and language therapists and audiologists from around the world. Competition and peer review is extremely intense. The Release submittal is for the "poster session", allowing hundreds of speech and language therapists to review and learn from our programme, thereby launching Release as Ireland's first emerging best practice in early intervention speech and language therapy.

In only 20 weeks of speech and language therapy Release students saw results equal to that of The George Washington University's 1:1 system, and vastly surpassed the results from year on year HSE speech assessments. Click here to find out more
