Teacher and SNA Workshop

With 2009 budget cuts heavily impacting on classroom sizes, and reduction in special needs classes, a workshop has been developed for teachers, special needs assistants, resource teachers, Montessori teachers and child facing school staff.

Release Communication, an international award winning speech and language therapy school for children with communication disabilities is running this workshop around Ireland, hosted by Educate Together Schools.

The workshop costs only €20 per attendee, which includes handouts, resources and downloadable classroom materials. There is a maximum of 50 teachers and special needs assistants in this class so early bookings are strongly advised.

The workshop, lasting 3 hours maximum will cover:

  1. Speech - theory and definitions of phonological versus articulation difficulties, developmental verbal dyspraxia, what to look out for in a classroom setting, suggestions and approaches for working with the child with speech difficulties, when to refer on to an SLT
  2. Language - outline of the main areas of language (vocabulary, grammar, receptive versus expressive language) and warning signs and symptoms of difficulties in each area (including advice on when to refer to an SLT). Activities and approaches for targeting receptive/expressive vocabulary, word-finding skills, grammar, memory recall and receptive language
  3. Autism Spectrum Disorders including Asperger Syndrome - definitions and presenting difficulties of autism spectrum disorders, sensory difficulties in ASD, working with the child with ASD in the classroom - approaches and activities.
