Standards and Implementation Procedures For the Certificate of Clinical Competence - ASHA Certification

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association issues Certificates of Clinical Competence to individuals who present evidence of their ability to provide independent clinical services to persons who have disorders of communication. Individuals who meet the standards specified by the Association's Council on Professional Standards may be awarded a Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) or a Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology (CCC-A). Individuals who meet the standards in both professional areas may be awarded both certificates

  1. Standard I: Degree
    1. Applicants for either Certificate must have a master's or doctoral degree.
  2. Standard II: Academic Course Work
    1. 75 Semester Credit Hours
  3. Standard II-A: Basic Science Course Work
    1. 27 of 75 semester credit hours
  4. Standard II-B: Professional Course Work
    1. 36 of 75 semester credit hours
  5. Standard III: Supervised Clinical Observation and Clinical Practicum
    1. 375 clock hours
  6. Standard III-A: Clinical Observation
    1. 25 clock hours
  7. Standard III-B: Clinical Practicum
    1. 350 clock hours
  8. Standard IV: National Examination in Speech-Language Pathology
    1. Applicants must pass the national examination in the area for which the Certification is sought.
  9. Standard V: The Clinical Fellowship
    1. After completion of academic course work (Standard II) and clinical practicum (Standard III), the applicant then must successfully complete a Clinical Fellowship.
